Richard, prayer is a COMBAT skill. If you don't want to use prayer don't do it, but good pkers use prayer one way or another. Some just happen to be the protect from melee prayer, personally I only use the ultimate strength prayer. Put the point is, prayer is a COMBAT skill and is to be used in COMBAT.

Back in old days with old pking no one used prayer check loads of vids no one did beside (DZ)
People used prayer to 3 hit! Before when everyone pked with 2's no one prayed.
